Built in the 16th century, rebuilt after the 1556 fire and named for Louise de Clermont, Duchess of Uzès, the house showcases Tonnerre’s Renaissance boom.
Mullioned windows, a corner tower crowned by a lantern, cornucopias, putti and theological virtues on the pediment epitomize aristocratic elegance. The allegory of Opportunity reminds visitors that heritage must be seized while it lasts.
In the 17th century the d’Éon de Beaumont family installed a Rocaille staircase. The famous Chevalier d’Éon was born here in 1728, adding espionage legend to the story.
Turned into a bank in 1879, controversially restored in 1888 with Corinthian columns and allegorical statues, then decorated by Georges-Henri Carré in 1907, the monument kept evolving even after its 1926 historic listing.
Taken over in 2023 by Tous au Château, Hôtel d’Uzès is undergoing a long-term restoration to welcome visitors again in July 2026—preserving heritage while creating a new cultural destination.
